Thai auto sales plummet by 26.4 per cent

Strict financing, weak economy

Thai automobile sales plummeted by 20.6 per cent during the first seven months of 2024, according to figures from industry compiler Toyota Motor Thailand.

According to Toyota, 354,421 vehicles were sold from January to July 2024 compared to 464,550 vehicles during the corresponding period a year ago.

The passenger car market suffered the most, plunging by 26.4 per cent to 16,571 units while the commercial vehicle sales fell by 16.9 per cent to 29,823 units.

Sales of xEVs were 17,243 units during this period, growing by 41.1 per cent, with HEV and BEV sales rising by 44.3 per cent and 48 per cent respectively.

TMT vice president Supakorn Ratanawaraha said auto sales in August has a tendency to recover, although sales would still be lower than last year due to strict finance measures and the general economic situation.
